A biological membrane, biomembrane or cell membrane is a selectively permeable membrane that separates cell from the external environment or creates intracellular compartments.Biological membranes, in the form of eukaryotic cell membranes, consist of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded, integral and peripheral proteins used in communication and transportation of chemicals and ions.

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes (2021) Interactions of different lipoproteins with supported phospholipid raft membrane (SPRM) patterns to understand similar in-vivo processes

The ability of amphipathic polymers to self-assemble with lipids and form nanodiscs has been a boon for the field of functional reconstitution of membrane proteins. In a field dominated by detergent micelles, a unique feature of polymer nanodiscs is their much-desired ability to align in the presence of an external magnetic field. Magnetic alignment facilitates the application of solid-state CiteScore: 8.9 ℹ CiteScore: 2019: 8.9 CiteScore measures the average citations received per peer-reviewed document published in this title. The organization of membrane lipids into nanodomains might potentially play a role in vital functions of cells and organisms.
